Television
began in Singapore on 15 February 1963. The then-Minister for Culture S.
Rajaratnam became the first person to appear on Singapore TV. At that time,

The pilot
service was only 1 hour per day on Channel 5. On 2 April 1963, it became a
regular service. It was a daily broadcast 7.15 pm to 11.15 pm in 4 official
languages.
On 23
November 1963, Channel 8 was added. It took over Chinese and Tamil programs,
while English and Malay programs stayed on Channel 5. Until Singapore’s
independence on 9 August 1965, Singapore was still a state of Malaysia and the
programs were aired together with TV Malaysia. When Singapore became
independent, it became the TV Division of Radio Television Singapore (RTS).
